Albert Haynesworth of the Washington Redskins is reportedly down about 32 pounds. Normally DT’s are the big boys, but the Redskins have switched to a 3-4. Although Haynesworth was one of the best DT’s in the game, he isn’t big enough to play a 3-4 DT. The DT for a 3-4 defensive system really needs to be an anchor for the middle of the D-line. Haynesworth had openly said he does not want to play DT with this defensive scheme change. The assumption is that he is lowering his weight so he can play an outside DE. That would be much more suitable. Although it is a big concern that he has never played that position before and has never even played in a 3-4 system. He has one of the biggest contracts ever for a D-lineman and what if this change doesn’t work and his production drops off? At least he isn’t just abandoning switch. He is making an effort and I’m sure he’s gonna be training like crazy. Pre-season is just about a month away.
